Misdirection

Misdirection

------------------------------------------------------------

Misdirection is a form of deception in which the attention of

an audience is focused on one thing in order to distract its

attention from another.

Misdirection takes advantage of the limits of the human mind
in order to give the wrong picture and memory. The mind of
typical audience member can only concentrate on one
thing
at a time. The magician uses this to manipulate the
audience's ideas, or, perceptions of sensory input, leading
them to draw false conclusions.

The Audiences attention may be directed in various ways.

Reverses

Reverses

---------------------------------------------------------

Card reverses are techniques whereby one or more cards in

a deck are made to change their direction, for example from

face up to face down.

 the throw

top change,

False deals

False deals

------------------------------------------------------------

Dealing cards (for example at the start of a traditional card

game) is considered a fair means of distributing cards. False

deals are techniques which appear to deliver cards fairly,

when actually the cards delivered are predetermined or

known to the performer. False dealing techniques

include: second dealing, bottom dealing, middle dealing,

false counts (more or less cards are dealt than expected),

and double dealing (the top and bottom cards of a small

packet are dealt together).

Palming

Palming

-------------------------------------------------------------
This photo showing the palming of the coins

Palming is a technique for holding or concealing one or

more cards. Cards palmed from a deck are typically held

in reserve (unseen by the audience) until production is

required for the illusion being performed. Palming

techniques include: the Braue diagonal tip-up, the

swing,

the thumb-count, face card palm, the crosswise, new

vertical, the gamblers' squaring, the gamblers' flat, the

Hugard top palm, the flip-over, the Hofzinser bottom, the

Braue bottom, the Tenkai palm and the Zingone bottom.

Double lift

Double lift

-------------------------------------------------------------
Example for double lift

double lift is a sleight of hand maneuver used

by magicians in card magic. It is a method by which

the magician can keep the identity of the top card secret by

lifting the top two cards at once, making it seem as if only

the

top card is picked up.
When the card is shown to the audience, the audience is

tricked into believing that they are shown the top card in the

deck where in fact they are shown the second card. When

the cards are displayed, the maneuver is sometimes called

the "double turnover".

There are different ways to perform this sleight, many of

which allow variations such as a triple lift or even a

quadruple

lift (turning over three or four cards over as one respectively).

Some versions of the ambitious card routine rely almost

entirely upon this sleight. In combination with a few other

mechanics and good showmanship, entire acts can and

have been made out of this single move.
